Map Rooms and Map Floorcloths

The latest floorcloth to leave the studio is headed for a beautiful map room in a home in Virginia. The ceiling in this room has an octagon-shaped detail with a compass design painted on the plaster. The floor has a beautiful inlay border design. My mission was to come up with a design which would mirror the ceiling shape and enhance, but not hide the parquet floor. We decided to go with a Carwitham marbled tile design. Here it is on my work table:

Cory

This floorcloth is 9′4″ X 10′5″- a very customized size which puts the entire floorcloth equidistant from the inlay floor border.

If the customer sends me a photo of the floorcloth in situ I’ll be sure to post it so you can see the finished effect.

Coincidentally, another client contacted me asking about doing a floorcloth with a map of Cape Cod on it. This would be for a room with a lot of history. The map would need to be antiqued to blend in with the furnishings. A round, 4′ table would sit on top of the floorcloth, so I proposed an octagon floorcloth.

Cape Cod This could be done with just about any map, but Cape Cod is particularly suited for the round or octagon shape. This one is a 9 foot octagon and is priced at $3240. Send me your map ideas and I’ll see what I can do. This would be really nice on a covered porch by the shore!

The Latest Floorcloth Projects

Busy, busy, busy! There are rolls of canvas all over the place in the studio, shop and gallery, each tagged with a note telling us what has been done and how many steps are left to do. It’s pretty overwhelming, but at least we’re trying to keep it all organized! There are 8 large pieces which are nearly ready to go to Louisiana for installation at the Rosedown Plantation. All totaled, these are using over 1000 square feet of #4 canvas- all double-primed front and back, sanded twice and double base-coated before the design was applied. I’ll have a final tally on the hours soon. I’m in the home stretch!

Carwitham 6This Carwitham 6 Floorcloth is on its way out the door. I LOVE the way the vibrant colors work on this pattern.

The customer has another floorcloth which I made for her last year and this one will coordinate really nicely with that. This one is 5′ X 8′ and was made on #8 canvas. You can see more information about this and other Carwitham designs by clicking here.

Coincidentally, one of the two designs I’m using for the Rosedown project is also a Carwitham design. It involves interlocking octagons.I’ll try to post a photo of that soon. Carwitham was a master of geometry and pattern- perfect for floorcloths!

IMG_5542.JPGThere has been a lot of interest lately in floorcloth workshops and classes. I am trying to figure out how best to do these. You can help me out by filling out this survey:
Please fill out my form.

I’m thinking about offering online classes, where I would show you videos of different techniques and be able to view photos of your work to be critiqued as well. I’m open to suggestions.

You will also notice in the survey that I mention Landscape painting and Drawing Horses. These are a couple of new ideas for classes. They wouldn’t necessarily be floorcloths- could be works on paper, wall hangings or basic stretched canvas paintings. What do you think?

This is the biggest kit we’ve offered yet! It’s a 6′ X 9′ floorcloth and comes as a primed, hemmed #8 floorcloth with the painting lines drawn on. All you do is fill them in with black or gray, paint on a few coats of poly, and you’ve got an eye-catching rug for your kitchen, hallway or porch (or anywhere else you want to put it!).

If black, gray and white isn’t your thing, try a diffBlack, Gray and Whiteerent color combination.

How about blue, yellow and white? Or, just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, what about greens?
