When I got a phone call a few weeks ago asking if I’d conduct a workshop for a woman and her 6 sisters, I thought, “How can I say no to this?” Generally, it’s difficult for me to schedule classes, as our work tables are always full and busy and clearing them out to make room for a group is difficult at best. Then there’s the PR work to let people know when the class will be, the frustration of most people not being able to free up that particular weekend, and then the question of “How many people do I need to make running this class worthwhile?” So when Kathy called me and suggested a weekend which was OK for me anyway and she already had 7 people ready and willing, I said “Yes! Please come. I’d love to meet this fun-sounding group!”
They drove to Vermont from various points in New England and New York on Friday night, stayed at Kathy’s ski place 20 minutes away and arrived ready and eager on Saturday morning. I gave each a 2′ X 3′ primed and hemmed floorcloth blank to get them started and a stack of template designs which they could choose from or if they wanted, they could make a design of their own choice. It’s always fascinating to see what people want to paint, and this group was no exception. We had everything from a very Monet-like landscape, to a regally-colored star, to a beautiful rooster to traditional compasses and checks! I helped them with the layouts, and , being sisters, they helped each other too. I could tell one and they’d pass the how-tos on. It was great.
They worked straight through the day with a nice lunch break, where they split up and some sat in the dining room and chatted with my husband, while others ate with me in the kitchen. My daughter made cookies from heaven and we all devoured those! Saturday night they went back to Kathy’s and told me they spent the evening in the hot tub while their 82 year old mother (who made the trip up from Mass. with a couple of the sisters) snapped photos.
This morning they were back at work relaxed, happy and chatting about their evening. They really had me wishing I had a whole bunch of sisters to hang out with too!
Everyone seemed very happy with their projects. They packed up their floorcloths and took little jars of paint home with them to finish them up. I look forward to hearing how their floorcloths turn out.
Here’s a shot of the whole gang with their almost-finished floorcloths. Quite a creative bunch!
Thanks girls. I had a blast!
