Floorcloths- Trying Something New!

Every now and then you have to shake things up. A while ago I had the idea that I could incorporate cotton printed fabric into a floorcloth. We played around a little with it and we’ve got some samples. The idea was to keep it simple (not always easy for me…) and let the print create the detail. The border would tie things together.

Now I’d like your opinion. Do you like these? Which one do you like the most?

OK. Here goes:

1. Blueberries

2. Poppies

3. Yellow Daisies (and detail)

4. Snowflakes

These are all small floorcloths (24″ x 36″) and would be a good size for in front of the kitchen sink or in a bathroom. We’ve worked out a few bugs. The rippling you can see on the Yellow Daisies one happened because we didn’t preshrink the fabric. So that’s just a test one, but I’d still like to hear what you think about the design.

Your feedback will be very appreciated!

Please explain how the fabric is incorporated into the floorcloth. I Iike the blueberries and the snowflakes the best. Nice designs.

The fabric was applied to the entire surface of the floorcloth, forming the background pattern. Then the borders were painted in a coordinating color. The whole piece was finished with 5 coats of polyurethane.

I agree. The blueberries and snowflakes are my favorites, too.

How is the fabric attached to the canvas? How durable will they be?
I like the blueberries and the poppies.
Each of the designs could work well depending on the colors in the room they’ll be living in.

I love them all, but the blueberries rock! A beautiful, balanced design.

I like the blueberries… What a great idea! As a matter of fact, I had thoughts of doing something with paper, or like a photo.. Would that work in the same way? What fun this could be… But how to attach it to the canvas is the big question.

I like both the blueberries and snowflakes. Will you share? I have decoupaged some beautiful napkins on floorcloths before and really liked that effect also.

Since we’re still in the testing phase of doing this, I don’t want to lead anyone astray by suggesting materials and techniques. As far as I can tell, you can glue just about anything to the primed canvas and as long as you put lots of poly on top, the whole thing seems to work. The snowflakes are paper flakes I cut out (like you used to do in grade school!)I ironed them flat between two cotton sheets before I glued them to the floorcloth.
I can see a lots of possibilities here. You could print out photos and decoupage them onto your floorcloth for a very personalized piece.
Send me your ideas! I’ll try some things out and let you know how it goes.

I like the poppies best, and the blueberries and the snowflakes after that. Customers could send you fabric that matches their curtains, tablecloths, or chair pads.

I was thinking of that too. As long as the fabric is 2″ bigger all around than the floorcloth they want, I can make it for them. I’m heading off to the fabric store today to see what I can come up with.

I have tried this technique with both rice paper and fabric and loved the results, only think paper decoupage was ok if you did not have to roll the cloth, it was a little delicate. Wish I could see the images?

Blueberries! Then snowflakes. I might suggest getting some quilting books from the library for ideas. Applique designs might work best altho a simple pieced design would be striking.
