The Flowers and Fans Floorcloth has settled into its new home and the owner sent this along: “As you can see the floorcloth looks perfect! We love it.”
Thanks, Margaret, for the great pictures.
When I got a phone call a few weeks ago asking if I’d conduct a workshop for a woman and her 6 sisters, I thought, “How can I say no to this?” Generally, it’s difficult for me to schedule classes, as our work tables are always full and busy and clearing them out to make room for a group is difficult at best. Then there’s the PR work to let people know when the class will be, the frustration of most people not being able to free up that particular weekend, and then the question of “How many people do I need to make running this class worthwhile?” So when Kathy called me and suggested a weekend which was OK for me anyway and she already had 7 people ready and willing, I said “Yes! Please come. I’d love to meet this fun-sounding group!”
OK, so maybe I’m losing it… I woke up in the middle of the night thinking, “Why not adhere canvas to a magnet sheet, paint it and have a whole new refrigerator?”
Every now and then you have to shake things up. A while ago I had the idea that I could incorporate cotton printed fabric into a floorcloth. We played around a little with it and we’ve got some samples. The idea was to keep it simple (not always easy for me…) and let the print create the detail. The border would tie things together.
Now I’d like your opinion. Do you like these? Which one do you like the most?

I finished the Dragonflies Floorcloth. It is 4′ 6″ wide by 6′ 6″ long. This would be great in an entranceway or mudroom or it could be used in a living room, in front of a sofa. My intent is to have it be used in a vacation home setting here in the mountains. The dragonflies celebrate the beauty of the summer; the snow-tipped pine cones are a reminder of winter. This winter has been amazing. Lots of snow and not-too-cold temperatures. The ski areas are very happy. The last few years have been kind of bleak, so this has been a welcome change.
An interesting project has popped up. I have the opportunity to have one of my floorcloths displayed at a local ski resort’s show house. This would be a great chance to let people see what I do. Now what do I show them? Vermont. Skiers. Vacationers… I dug through a bunch of my photographs from floorcloths I painted several years ago and found this one:
It’s hard to send my floorcloths off. No matter how carefully they’re packed and even though I know they will be well taken care of in their new homes, after all the time and meticulous work, I always feel more than a little anxious as the FedEx guy pulls out of my driveway.
I’ve enjoyed sharing this project with my readers. It actually made me realize how many steps are involved!
Today my husband helped me set this one up in our kitchen so I can have one more shot for my records.
