This design was derived from a needlepoint rug pattern. Lisa Curry Mair used colors to coordinate with the customers’ Colonial dining room and made the floorcloth the perfect size for their furnishings. A combination of freehand painting and stamping techniques were used to create this one-of-a-kind floorcloth.

This Tumbling Blocks design by John Carwitham from the 18th century fits perfectly in the study of this magnificent historic home. Created at Canvasworks in 2010.

This Greek Key design is from a remnant found in the Field Hodges House, as part of Historic New England’s collection of artifacts. Canvasworks reproduces this design in a variety of sizes under a licensing agreement with Historic New England.

This Flowers and Stars design is from a remnant found in the McClellan House, as part of Historic New England’s collection of artifacts. Canvasworks reproduces this design in a variety of sizes under a licensing agreement with Historic New England.

This fabulous compass was used in an advertisement by Alexander Wetherstone in 1760 to promote his floorcloth painting business in Great Britain. It translates perfectly to this large-scale floorcloth which was made at Canvasworks in 2009.

A remnant of floorcloth was found in an attic space at the Melrose Plantation and was used to reproduce pieces for two hallways, a Butler’s pantry and a storage room. The interlocking faux woodgrained stars create a predecessor of what later became linoleum.

From the upstairs landing of the magnificent plantation home, this repeat pattern creates an airy, lightness over the dark, cypress floors. Canvasworks created and installed this pattern in a 30-foot hall, side sitting room and this curved stair landing in 2009.

This is a grand entry for the elaborate Rosedown Plantation home. The walls are papered with a hand-blockprinted mural created in France in the 1800s. The floorcloth was designed by William Seale, noted White House historian, and entirely hand-painted by Lisa Curry Mair in 2009.

This blue and white marbled checkerboard with an interlocking geometric border is absolutely stunning in this grand late 18th century home. it was made at Canvasworks in 2006 and was installed in 2007.

Lisa Curry Mair was commissioned by Boston’s MFA in 2010 to create a floorcloth for its new Art of the Americas wing. The design is a John Carwitham Tumbling Block, which is perfect for the Revolutionary War era , which the room is depicting.

The Lemon House served as a tavern and inn for travelers early in the 19th century. In 2011 Canvasworks created two 20′ X 20′ floorcloths for a wall-to-wall installation in the house’s dining room. The pattern of large black and white squares was historically researched. Ten foot pieces of heavy #4 canvas were spliced together prior to painting.

The Lemon House Tavern at the Allegheny Portage Railroad Museum is open to the public, showing how the house looked in the early 1800s. In 2011 Canvasworks created a 40-foot long floorcloth for the main entryway. This floorcloth is installed wall to wall and has a marble effect applied to the lighter areas. This design was frequently used to replicate tiled marble floors.

This design is called “Acorns and Dragonflies” and it gets it’s style from the Arts and Crafts period, with dragonflies and branches of berries encircling the border and oak leaves and acorns adorning the center medallions.

This floorcloth is done by first painting the background colors of Hale Navy and Lenox Tan and then stamping the flower motif on the background.

The next step is to lay out the center medallions and paint them; all done using freehand techniques. The border is done last.

Again, a repeated motif, with every leaf, dragonfly and berry handpainted on the canvas.
